Created in the early 2000s, Pornpix reflects a formative moment in digital culture. Within this visual regime, the pixelated fragment becomes a phantom. It is neither the body nor simply its disappearance, but something brought into existence through censorship. Generated as a technical solution, it acquires an unexpected autonomy with unplanned effects.
The work treats this phantom not as evidence of absence, but as a new cultural artefact: an object that reveals how contemporary systems of vision produce forms that exceed their intended purpose.
Each pixel reduces the body to an averaged field of colour, translating continuous flesh into discrete units that can be processed, transmitted and regulated. Isolated from their original context and enlarged to bodily scale, these fragments invite contemplation of this transformation, echoing the meditative encounter of colour-field abstraction. In doing so, the work collapses the reflective space historically associated with abstraction into an image born from the censorship of desire; the digital management of instinct.
The work reflects on a historical moment in which digital space has amplified and exposed impulses once largely confined to the private sphere, asking how the experience of ourselves and of others changes when intimacy, desire and the body increasingly unfold within computational systems.
